Mavis Staples at Rockefeller Park (8.1.07)
Mavis Staples, of the legendary Staple Singers, played New York City's Rockefeller Park last night as part of the annual and free River to River festival. Cute, comfortable and confident, Sister Mavis winked at, quipped back, and shouted out a host of characters in the audience as she made her way through a crop of civil rights songs from her current album, We'll Never Turn Back, and a few Staple Singers' classics. As much as we were there to hear her, she was there to recognize us. What the Staple Singers did, what Mavis and her older sister Yvonne--who sang backing vocals yesterday--still do, is remind us of our humanity. That's what "Respect Yourself" was all about.
