Spotlight: Jacky Terrasson

Jacky Terrasson, the pianist and composer of French and African American heritage, is killing me with his take on Stevie Wonder's
"Isn't She Lovely" from his album
Smile (2003).
Although, thanks to my mama, I have been familiar with Terrasson's playing for a dozen years, his recent work has escaped me. He's collaborated with
everyone (I like) from
Cassandra Wilson to
Stefon Harris and I was reminded today that I own nowhere near enough of his
catalogue (ten albums deep as a leader). I caught him perform once a few years back at
Washington Irving High School in New York and there weren't but a few people near my age in the venue and less than that were of color despite the fact that it was a free show. Experiences like that are why I created the
52 jazz listening group almost a year ago, which was dormant in July after a lovely outing to see
Cassandra Wilson at Summerstage in June. I'd like to see more of my demographic taking in brilliant artists like Terrasson.
Terrasson will be releasing a new album, Mirror, on his longtime label Blue Note, later this month and at least one reviewer has already been charmed.
Here's the title track as included on the Blue Note Bonnaroo sampler: [MP3].
