Mya's New Joint is Decidely not Jumpin'
"Ridin'" - Mya (2007)
I like Mya's brand of skanky R&B and have since she ripped off her scarlet cheongsam and dipped low with Sisqó in the "It's All About Me" video. But with adulthood and a fortuitous albeit fleeting role in the Oscar-winning Chicago, I expected her to class it up and address the sensibilties of her audience as they stand today and not in their horndog yesteryears. Then she came with "My Love is Like...Wo", a quasi-shameful indulgence that entertained but didn't do much to raise her stock. If anything, in the video she seemed to be trying a little too hard, paying conspicuous homage to Chicago and hoofing à la Savion in Jane Fonda workout get ups. Although she tried a mature look for "Fallen," the follow up single based on the classic Jay Dee production, "Runnin'", if memory serves, it didn't climb the charts. So today I'm flipping through the channels because I've already seen the episode of Law & Order SVU on USA and the episode of Law and Order on TNT and I catch her new video, "Ridin'", as ostensibly low budget as it is late ninetes. And what's up with the Ray J "One Wish" vocals!? Downgrade. I'll comfort myself with "Movin' On" ("Whose drawers are these?").

i've like mya since the beginning, but i've always wanted to like her more. unfortunately, she hasn't given me cause. she shined (shone? had shone?) in CHICAGO, and i just wish she would stay where she's obviously supposed to be - musical theater.
