40 Days & 40 Nights: Janelle Monae

To commemorate the most beautifullest time of the year for me, summertime in the NYC, I will be posting concert reviews from this Independence Day weekend through Labor Day. I'm calling this endeavor, 40 Days & 40 Nights. I aim to blog that many shows, whether they stir me when the sun bears down brutal or when it has set.
JANELLE MONAE, BROOKLYN, 7.05.08
He who would live in my lap has yet to be found but I'd hope he'd rouse me rowdy like button-cute Janelle Monae this evening at the kick off of the 4th annual Afro-Punk festival. She flapped and froze and hopped and moonwalked and even jazz-handed Al Jolson style. It was brilliant, she was breathtaking and although hoarse, she is it. She is the tiny brown something to believe in for what remains of the aughties.
"Violet Stars, Happy Hunting" threw my neck out at her entrance and "Lettin' Go" at her encore, my back. I think the many Morehouse and Spelman College alums assembled amidst the kinky Brooklynites and slim skate punks would agree, it was a good day turned night, hair frizzing humidity and all. Check my Flickr slideshow for more goodies and remember, "All the sirens go 'doodoo doodoo doodoo...'"
