40 Days & 40 Nights: Peter Hadar

To commemorate the most beautifullest time of the year for me, summertime in the NYC, I will be posting concert reviews from this Independence Day weekend through Labor Day. I'm calling this endeavor, 40 Days & 40 Nights. I aim to blog that many shows, whether they stir me when the sun bears down brutal or when it has set.
PETER HADAR, MANHATTAN 7.23.08
Last Wednesday, there didn't look to be any "L.E.S. Artistes" slinking through 205, a small club on the corner of Chrystie and Stanton in New York City. It was more a mix of young professionals, disparate industry types and random midweek revelers. Although a slightly stilted scene for soul singer Peter Hadar, which the reggae-lite stylings of opener Sophia Bastian did little to abate, the New Jersey native presided with ease.
It was well after midnight when Hadar took to the stage and he quickly dug into his wired world of music, leaning heavy on selections from his sophomore independent release, Well Dressed for the Art Show. But first he mellowed the room out by offering a quick and dirty birthday greeting to those popping born-day bottles and launching into a freestyle over Lil Wayne's "A Millie."
Composed and casual, Hadar engendered enthusiasm without seeming overeager. His brandied voice slipped into a rap cadence on the blistering "Ocean Wet" and ascended into a feathery falsetto on the whimsical "Planets," anchored by his band of weirdos, Daru Jones on drums, Mike Genato on keys with James Ronaghan serving as deejay. The quartet pushed their dnb'ed grooves, flecked with New Jeru house and Detroit hip hop, to the limit and, as the show winded down, ceded the floor to preternaturally rhythmic Jones of Slum Village note. Heads rattled back and forth as if on a collective yo-yo until, in parting, Hadar hyped 205 up with a taste of his forthcoming drum and bass project.
Check my Flickr slideshow for more glimpses of the cool weirdos in action.
Tonight Peter Hadar performs at Drom in New York City. Check the Eclectic Ride web site for more info.
