Kobe, Curt Schilling and the Great Bill Walton
Oh yeah, I have a blog to update. Let's get it...
Interesting war of words (okay, slight exaggeration...) going down between Kobe Bryant and Bo Sox pitcher Curt Schilling. Schilling sort of called KB24 out on his blog after the Lakers' Game 2 loss in Boston. Kobe later responded: "Go Yankees!" Guess it beats hearing more about the endless Tim Donaghy saga...
And just another reason Bill Walton is the man (courtesy of Yahoo! Sports):
CALLER ID: Occasionally, Luke Walton picks up his phone and gets an earful.
"This is Paul Pierce," the caller says. "You're a bum, and all your teammates are bums."
Only it isn't actually Pierce--or Carlos Boozer or Carmelo Anthony. Instead, it's just an attempt by Walton's Hall of Fame father to motivate his son in the NBA finals.
"He wouldn't even change his voice," Luke Walton said.
Everyone in the NBA wants to win a title, but Walton has an added motivation: He won't have to hear from his dad about their disparity in championships any more.
Or not as much, at least.
"It would be a lot easier to have dinner with him," said the younger Walton, who played at Arizona. "He already talks trash about me not winning an NCAA championship."
Bill Walton went to UCLA and won two championships, then added to his haul in the NBA when he won three more. He gave the championship rings to his parents, and Luke remembers seeing the baubles when he'd visit his grandparents.
So, if Luke wins one, would he give the ring to his dad?
"I don't think a Lakers ring is safe in that house," he said. "It might get mistakenly thrown out."
Back to work...Go Celtics.
The Best Kicks $1017 Can Buy...

Here it is: Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Game 1 of the NBA Finals, the game folks have been clamoring for since November.
To be honest, you've gotta be a little surprised this match-up came together like it did. Kobe wanting out of L.A. Boston banking the franchise on a title run. The Memphis Grizzlies handing the Lakers Pau Gasol. The Hawks disappearing in Game 7. The Pistons getting old. The Spurs getting old. And, now, another Lakers/Celtics match-up. Nice.
To commemorate the occasion, adidas is dropping these super-exclusive adidas Team Signature Commander sneaks today. (These shoes didn't even come out yet!) Due out for the '08-'09 season, adidas has specially-designed these for Kevin Garnett to wear during every game of the NBA Finals. Problem is, you're gonna have trouble getting your hands on them. Only eight pairs will be sold through Celtics.com, the TD Banknorth Garden Pro Shop and the NBA Store in New York City, meaning you better be quick in you wanna snatch up a pair. Oh, and they're retailing for $1017 (to commemorate the Celts run at their 17th NBA championship), so there's that obstacle to tackle, too. Get to steppin' and check them out here.
Question: Who Watches Hockey?
I had 2 minutes to check out the sports page today and 2 minutes to blog now. Let's get it.
The Detroit Red Wings/Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Finals game the other night was a classic. I missed it. You probably did, too. But, as Tiger Woods said yesterday, nobody really gives a shit about hockey anyway. So, who cares?
For the record, I've been to countless college and pro basketball games, a ton of baseball games, a couple football games and exactly one hockey game in my life. The verdict: There's nothing like seeing the NHL live. But, really, like Tiger Woods said, no one cares. Too bad.
