SERIOUSLY?
There's no time in the day to do this. But it's like the law now: one must blog. One must blog or be flogged.

[First off: Shout-out to Howard U] So, welcome to my world. Sitting here at the VIBE/VIX offices, later than I like to be, waiting on pages to close (it's what we do up here) coming down off one hell of a day: you know, the stress doesn't stop, only the people make things tolerable, and then when the people get on my nerves (my staff wouldn't be mine if they weren't under my skin, testing me, egging me on, trying to do right, looking all dragged out from too much idea-having/writing/editing/photo-taking/art directing, yet looking like they're living the life, as Wyclef said a while ago, just like movie stars ), I might as well go out for my fave cocktail and call it a damn night.
But. No. Besides, tired as I am, I'm relentlessly listening to Swizz' new single, wanting Cassidy's new mixtape so I can put it on my iPod, and I'm still a bit energized by my weekend trip to Washington DC (never am I mad at Amtrak, especially that Acela biz class). I was down there for the Howard University Magazine Conference, and the kids are better than allright: almost too wise and good-looking and thorough. Ready for action, they seem, organized and focused enough to make me scared for anyone who stands in their way. They made me feel welcome, and I was happy to see MItzi down there, and Joyce, too.
I could list my phone log here (pure excitement), talk aout the books I'm reading (at a snail's pace), about the show's I TiVo (you'd yawn), the shows I miss ... but I'll save all that for later. I'll be trying to get my update on frequently. And I'll try to write in when I'm less, um, burnt.

Fool, caucasion people can go to Howard. Go right ahead fire the black players on the Saints. Why you at fire all the blacks in the NFL and the NBA, then watch the suits go crazy cuase they lost damn every player in those leaugues. And by the way whites have appeared on the cover of black magazines/ Scott storch eminem paul wal. Come on now open your mind do research. They may nto be your brand of white. By the way if those "derrogatory"terms had not been used by whites in the manner in which it was intended then blacks would not have such animosity towards those outside of our race using it.

Danyel Smith, First of all, I think someone should sue your magazine, because they're are not any white people being represented. That is so discriminating. I cannot believe your response to how your rappers are expressing themselves artistically by talking about ho's, gangs, screwing, drugs, shooting. They are talking about themselves, so why can't we repeat it. I cannot believe you said that black people can talk about other black people in derrogatory way, but no one else can. Maybe we should fire the black nfl players that named the New Orleans Saints offensive line CRACKER BACKERS. I wasn't pissed off about the whole Imus thing until they ran your clip. Get a white person on your cover ! Get white people going to Howard.

Re Danyel Smith's comment on Imus, whatta a load of crap! We have free speech and if words were wrong, you shouldn't say them either. (And BTW, "Nigger" is a fine word originally meaning, in 18th century America, an immigrant from Nigeria, later, a freed slave. If you stupid, lazy thugs stayed in school, you'd know that!) Why don't you do something instead about the fact that blacks commit a hugely disproportionate (by racial percentage) number of violent crimes, believing they can take whatever they want, mug 101-year-old white woman, murder, steal, cheat the system, maim, do anything they want (except work). Blacks' behavior so far only proves their genetic inferiority.

Danyel,
Loved your blog, and I will definitely be looking in for more info.
Talk about an old head, I attended HU in the seventies! Inspired by the enthusiasm I am reading and hearing about here, because I am currently teaching 18-21 year old high school dropouts, so I could really use the energy and motivation you guys are expressing.
Keep on truckin'!! (told u I was old school!)
P.S. huny, I agree. eric Really shouldn't hate like that. The ATL may be hot right now, but D. C. was Chocolate City when Atlanta was still burning. :-)

Hello Ms. Danyel Smith,
Thank you so much for taking the time out to make the voyage from NY to the Mecca (Howard). You definately dropped some serious knowlege about the indusrty and you gave us up-and-commers the motivation to keep going and know that we can accomplish our dreams if we just believe that we can and see things through.
Looking forward to reading your book!

Danyel, squeezing yet another thing into your hectic days, huh??. thanks for the shout out and the visit to my alma mater. It was lovely seeing you. It had been so long. Those heels were FIRE and you were sounded fabulously inspiring, to an old head like myself and the students. Keep doing what you're doing, cause its working for you and the mags, too....jd

Hey, I was at the conference this weekend and I loved it! It was such an honor to meet Ms. Smith. Her speech was wonderful. And not only is she motivated, intelligent, articulate, and one hell of a writer, but she is gorgeous (I see u in the black suit and red pumps, girl!!!). I'm such a fan of Vibe of Vibe Vixen and I look forward to next year's conference. I would love Ms. Smith to come back and teach us how to write an album review.
P.S: The AUC should really stop hating on Howard. Stop messin wit the Mecca.

So when are you coming to the Atlanta University Center? Everybody knows Howard doesn't hold a candle to Morehouse, Spelman or (sometimes) Clark.
