Twisted Black ft. Yo Gotti & Chyna Whyte: "Throw It Up"
from the forthcoming Street Fame (TVT)

Twisted Black's story is a devastating one. A gifted MC from Fort Worth, TX. who was once a member of the mostly unheard mid-90s duo, One Gud Cide, in 2006, Black signed to TVT Records after more than a decade releasing albums on small, local labels. His first single "I'm A Fool Wit It" was meant to break him to a larger audiencing, relying on a lighter, blippier sound than I was accustomed to hearing him rhyme over. In July of last year the 35-year-old rapper (real name: Tommy Burns), was found guilty of conspiracy to sell crack cocaine in a US District court after being arrested by DEA authorities back in July. He was sentenced to life in prison.

This followup, also from his album, falls somewhere between One Gud Cide's tense, personal music, like the crushing "Mama Told Me," and the crunk-y bounce of "Fool." Black's a traditional Southern stylist. He never spits too hard or too fast, sauntering on the track at his own leisurely pace. This track (annoying Chyna White verse notwithstanding) approximates the lane Twisted could have occupied if he'd stayed out of trouble. Street Fame will likely be the last we hear fom Twisted, but I'd recommend seeking out O.G.C.'s first two albums first, especially Look What The Streets Made.

Shout to BMI for spreading the wealth. If you're looking for doom-n-gloom Southern Gothic rap, there is no better man.
