Hush, Hush, Pass: Hip-Hop Ads Gone Crazy

When it comes to using hip-hop culture in ads, VC must warn agencies that pretending to be cool isn't cool at all. Your best bet is to make fun of those who try to be down.

Take McDonalds, for instance:

What a clown.

Now compare that to this slick viral video ad for Smirnoff Ice:

Now, doesn't that make you want to take a drink?

Carmen Van Kerckhove says:

LOL! Wow that Mickey D's print ad is pretty bad. But not as bad as the TV spot they (I think it was them - or some other fast food joint) ran a few years back where they had a black DJ spinning a cheeseburger on his turntables.

It's always scary when you're watching a really cheesy ad and suddenly realize with horror that you are in fact, their target demographic, and this is what they think will appeal to you. :)
