I have heard the rumours about Nee-Yo being gay for a while and then stumbled upon this article...and had the humorous and sad misfortune of reading some of the ridiculous comments being posted about the rumours.

There is so much to say but first of all, I find it incredulous in this day and age that people, and in particular, the black community, have such a backward and ignorant attitude towards homosexuality. I am black, gay (proud to nonchalant in the main), male and from the UK and the same issues exist within the black community but it seems much worst in the US.

I think the black community (straight) needs to understand, not necessarily condone, but understand that homosexuality does exist regardless of religious belief and is prevalent amongst all races INCLUDING black.

I am aware of the concept of 'downlow' and whilst it is not exclusive to the black community, I feel that ignorance and intolerance has created the situation where gay black men feel forced by their own community and society to maintain a facade of heterosexuality which involves suppressing their sexuality at best and often leads to promiscuity, mental and emotional anguish, deceit, disruption of numerous lives and the spread of HIV, AIDS and other STD'S at worst.

I have been in the very fortunate position of being able to come out as gay to my parents, sister, wider family and friends, being accepted and having better and more honest relationships/friendships with all (and most importantly myself) concerned. I know that I am more settled as a result and do not engage in the risky behaviors and act on the impulses that I once did, mainly because my sexuality was repressed.

It is difficult to conclude because there is a lot more I could say and argue to the hilt but finally, it would not surprise me if Nee-Yo was gay but then again he could be straight - who cares? As long as he is happy, content and living a life that suits him and doesn't intentionally hurt others then thats all that matters.

However, if all of the UK's and US's black celebrities who are actually gay or lesbian were to come out/be outed, I think the black community and society at large would be shocked beyond belief to find out that some of the supposedly straight sex symbols/role models/family men and women etc are attracted to the same sex. This may then lead them to question the concept, reality and stereotypes of homosexuality and how it may apply to themselves and their friends, relatives.

Food for thought - I took my straight black friends to a gay bar in Central London that was extremely popular with out/discreet/closeted black and minority ethnic men and one friend in particular was surprised to identify a number of men at the bar from his neighbourhood or college, who did not remotely 'look or sound' gay and were considered 'street'.
This was somebody's son, cousin, grandson, friend, colleague or perhaps boyfriend, husband or father and the chances are that judging the black community's attitude to sexual orientation, it affects many more of us out there than we are aware of or would care to realise.
