Mike Evans, the Original Lionel Jefferson, Dies
Before losing James Brown on Christmas Day, we suffered another loss in the Black entertainment world. Mike Evans, the original Lionel Jefferson on the long-running sitcom The Jeffersons, died on December 14th of throat cancer.
Mike Evans originated the character of Lionel Jefferson on the sitcom All In the Family and when the Jeffersons moved on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky-hy-hy in 1975, he was right there. In addition to being an actor, Mr. Evans was an accomplished writer and co-creator of the groundbreaking all-black sitcom Good Times along with Eric Monte. When his work on Good Times needed more of his time, he left The Jeffersons and was replaced by actor Damon Evans. However, once Good Times wrapped, Mike Evans returned to The Jeffersons to reprise his role as the O.G. Lionel.
Evans is survived by daughter Tammy, his mother, Annie Sue, his brother Thomas, cousin Harold, and his niece, Chrystal. VC offers our sincere condolences to Mike Evans' family.
